Feng shui is an ancient Chinese Science which has been used for many thousands of years. This is based on the idea that everything is connected together somehow. Feng Shui literally means “Wind and Water” when translated. Feng Shui looks at the flow of energy, known as chi in a room, or in any space. The energy is always moving, and balance is what is important in Feng Shui. There are many different things that can affect Chi, including the location of your home, and the direction your house points in.

Chi Flow in the rooms in your home are very important factors when looking at Feng Shui. Chi needs to be allowed to flow easily through the room and not get stuck anywhere. Equally this energy cannot be allowed to flow too fast, as this can cause problems too. Take a look around your rooms and see how energy flows through your room. Try to find ways that you can use to improve the flow of energy. Clutter will be the biggest problem you will experience from a Feng Shui point of view. If you remove the piles of clutter then you should be able to dramatically improve the flow of energy.

The Chinese regarded the balance of five elements to be very important. These five elements are metal, earth, fire, wood and water. By balancing these elements in your home you will be able to create a much better balance in your life. The earth element is represented by using plants, fire can be represented by using candles or lighting. It’s important that all of the elements are in balance.

A Bagua is a Chinese compass which is split into nine sections. Each section is associated with a particular area of your life. You can use this on the floor plan using the direction of your home and work out what the different sections of your home mean. Another important part of Feng Shui are the colors, by using specific colors you will be able to improve the flow of energy. It can be very complicated to learn Feng Shui techniques, however it does get easier.

It’s possible to improve your life fairly easily by doing small things such as adding wind chimes to stop the chi stagnating. You should use metal wind chimes which are hollow so that they make a noise. Anything with a sharp corner is bad, so try and use plants to soften the corner. You should always sit so that you are facing away from the walls, preferably towards the door, you should never sit with your back towards a window.

Feng Shui will also improve if you use fresh flowers, this should also improve your love life. The flowers should be put in a window which is west facing. You can improve the chi energy by hanging a crystal in the room. The whole home should be kept clean, especially the entrance to your home.

A great way to improve the chi levels in your home is to use mirrors, however you can’t add them anywhere you like. You have to be very careful that you know exactly what is being reflected. Keep certain rooms for certain activities, however make sure that every room is used, otherwise stagnant energy can build up. By using Feng Shui techniques you will be amazed at how easy it is to improve your life

Even though the media around the world are doing their best to show us different there is still a massive amount of building work going on around the globe. Much of the construction that is going up is industrial and commercial building but a fair amount of the work is also residential building. As the population of the world grows then they have to be housed somewhere so it looks like the residential building boom will continue for some years to come yet. As we are all aware, with the population boom as well as the mass exodus from many of the poorer Eastern European countries to the wealthier countries within Europe this building work will need to continue for many years to come to satisfy the demands. The big problem with building on these sort of scales is that generally everything is built to a price point rather than a specification, this leads to mile after mile of the same looking houses being built all over the countryside with no discernible differences between any of them from the outside. Many of the countries where this is happening are famed and renowned for their wonderful architecture so it seems a shame that for the foreseeable future this is what many of these countries are going to look like. If you own one of these mass produced houses what can you do to make yours stand out from all the other miles and miles of mediocrity?

Although the exterior of these mass produced houses leads a lot to be desired it is possible to create quick an individual look inside the house. Luckily for many people interior design has come a long way in the past 10 years and is much more high profile than it was in the early 90′s, thanks mainly to television programmes and interior design magazines. Solely using these as your reference points though you would fall into the same trap as many others, simply replicating the looks that the media push and highlight and creating a blandness that you could find in any other mass produced home in the land.

The trick is to be individual, choose a style of interior decoration that you like and mould a style around that. Give your style a little thought to ensure that it is workable and then slowly try to piece it all together. To create an individual style does not happen overnight and cannot be achieved in just a few shopping trips. You may find yourself looking through furniture sales and antiques shops for some while before you find a piece that you think would add a special touch to a room. To achieve your desired look may take some time to complete so patience may be needed.

To create a totally unique look within your home antique furniture is a great way to go. The beauty with antique furniture is that it does not have to make your house look like an old gentleman’s club; in many cases antique furniture can be quite subtle and add a totally individual look to any home. Thought must be applied when looking to design a home around antiques, differing periods offer up totally different looks to other periods, mixing and matching pieces of furniture from totally different periods can create a terrible look so it is always best to what is available to you before you plough headlong into buying up antique furniture for your home

Furnishing your home with antique furniture certainly is a way to break away from the same old interior design styles that we see in homes all over the country. Antique furniture does not in all cases work out to be dearer than modern mass produced furniture. You could end up with a totally wonderful looking unique home that has cost less to furnish than many of the homes in your street furnished with no style and heritage.

A major mistake committed by many home owners is that they are inclined to postpone home improvements or neglect it completely owing to the rising costs of maintenance. This may further aggravate the bad condition in which the house is maintained and increase the cost of the home improvement project.

DIY (do-it-yourself) home improvement projects help people overcome such problems as it provides the ability to the homeowner to undertake the project thereby reducing the cost of the project and help them take up the burden of renovations and repair.

There are many guides that are available that will help you know how to plan the project well beforehand so that you can change the outlook of the home all by yourself to provide it the change or the repair you wanted.

But, going the DIY way to home improvement does not mean that everything will just go by smoothly and there are no glitches associated with it. You should always keep in mind some important tips before jumping in into a DIY project that will help you along the way and provide better results to your work

1. List out the choices
It is better not to venture into going the DIY way without listing all the choices that you have and weighing the benefits and disadvantages of each and every one of them. Once you have listed all the choices, check if a DIY home improvement is the best way to go or if anything else is better. If you feel you cannot get the job accomplished by taking the DIY method, it is better to take professional help to finish the work rather than wasting your time and money. Yes, it is important to remember that such projects undertaken by yourself not only costs you but also needs you to put in precious time to get it completed.

2. Have some flexibility
Unlike a contract undertaken by a professional, there may be other unanticipated expenses while taking a DIY project. It is better to have some flexibility and plan to have some reserve money allocated to such added expenses that you may have to put up with.

3. Better plan ahead
You need to go one step forward and plan ahead by keeping future home improvement projects in mind while planning any project. This kind of planning ahead will not only save up on expenses but will also help you save unnecessary additional expenditure while undertaking future projects.

Taking up a DIY home improvement project is definitely not a simple task. There are many things that you need to bear in mind and decide wisely whether undertaking the project by yourself is the best way to go or not.
